film noir

I think that film noir has inevitably influenced current genres of new media, although to be honnest I'm not completely sure how. I do see all the same components of film noir (open sexuality, femme fatales, absence of sentimentality ect.) in a lot of modern day TV and cinema but I think those themes are now universal and a part of almost everything. There is sexual frankness on Nickelodean these days... from watching TV with my sister I can see that a major theme The Suite Life of Zack and Cody has become about finding girlfriends. I also think that a lot current crime shows such as SVU have reincarnated the film noir genre by creating suspensful modern day mysteries that often include sex and a clear absence of sentimentality. While at the time I'm sure that Gloria's clear sexual forewordness was somewhat shocking, I have seen tons of crime shows about cold hearted women/strippers using men for money and or killing them.

I am not extremely well versed in cinematography but I do think that a lot of the elements of film noir are part of a "feedback loop" with media. A lot of the same elements have been played with for years, they just keep becoming more and more drastic and controversial. It's funny to me that an element of film noir is the
"absence of sentimentality" because that is now an element to modern day life. It can certainly be found in new media, not necciarily because of film noir, but because it is reflecting life.
